NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Laila Ibrahim has been named the MEAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the first weekly award that Ibrahim has received in her career.
A sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ibrahim earned All-Tournament Team honors at the UNLV Rebel Challenge after recording 17 kills on .448 hitting along with 16 total blocks (1.60 per set) as the Eagles went 2-1.
Ibrahim opened the tournament with a pair of kills and a team-high three blocks at UNLV before coming back with a seven-kill, two block performance in a sweep over Lamar the following day. In a four-set victory over Portland on Saturday, Ibrahim shattered a career-high with 11 blocks while hitting .538 with nine kills on 13 swings. Both Ibrahim's total blocks and the team's 17.0 blocks against the Pilots are believed to be school records.
For the season, Ibrahim leads the MEAC with a .481 hitting percentage while ranking second in the league in blocks (0.91 blocks/set).
The Eagles (10-2) open conference play on Friday, September 22 when they travel to Delaware State at 6 pm in a rematch of the 2022 MEAC Championship Game.
