Volleyball’s Seven-Match Win Streak Snapped at UNLV in Rebel Challenge

LAS VEGAS – A seven-match winning streak by the Coppin State volleyball team came to an end with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) loss at UNLV on Thursday night at Cox Pavilion.  The Eagles fall to 8-2 on the season while the Rebels improve to 6-4 on the year.

TaKenya Stafford led Coppin with seven kills, followed by Ammaarah Williams with six and Paola Caten with a season-high five. Andrea Tsvetanova recorded 22 assists and Coco Figueroa tallied a team-high ten digs.

Ashley Roman was credited with eight digs while Caten added five digs. Laila Ibrahim had a match-high three blocks.

UNLV hit .330 compared to just .097 for the Eagles.

Set 1
  • Seven rotation errors in the service game proved costly for the Eagles, leading to automatic points for UNLV before a rally could start.
  • A 5-0 early run for the Rebels gave the hosts a 7-2 advantage with a pair of rotation errors in the process.
  • Coppin pulled to within three points a couple times but the errors held it back from pulling any closer.
  • Stafford had three kills in the frame to lead all players while Figueroa had a match-high eight digs.
Set 2
  • UNLV got out to an early 4-0 lead, but Coppin regrouped to pull within 7-5 after forcing three Rebel errors.
  • The Eagles gave up five of the next six points, with a Stafford kill accounting for the lone CSU point which forced head coach Tim Walsh to call a timeout.
  • After a kill from Laila Ibrahim cut the UNLV lead to 15-11, the Rebels scored seven-straight points with four kills to pull away.
  • Caten led a last-ditch effort for the Navy & Gold with a kill and an ace, but UNLV went on to finish the frame with a kill by the setter.
Set 3
  • Coppin led from the start and scored three of four points to go up 15-12 at the media timeout after a kill from Stafford and a block from Ibrahim.
  • UNLV came out the break with a 5-1 run, taking its first lead of the frame at 17-16 and added another kill to force an Eagles timeout.
  • Stafford stopped the drought with a kill to pull back within a point, but it was given right back with a service error.
  • Ammaarah Williams recorded a pair of kills and CSU forced an error to pull within, 22-20, but the Rebels won it with a 3-1 run.
  • Coppin recorded 14 kills in the set after recording just nine through the first two sets and hit .256 for the frame.
Up Next: Coppin State returns to action on Friday, September 15 when they take on Lamar University in a 6:00 pm ET start at the Rebel Challenge.
