Volleyball Hits Season-High .389 in Sweep of Lamar at UNLV Rebel Challenge

LAS VEGAS – Coppin State's volleyball team swept Lamar (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) on Friday night at Cox Pavilion to improve to 9-2 on the season. The Eagles hit a season-high .389 with 45 kills on 95 swings.
 
TaKenya Stafford led CSU with 12 kills on .435 hitting, followed by Ammaarah Williams with eight kills and Laila Ibrahim with seven kills, respectively. Geraldyn Palacios and Paola Caten tallied six kills each and Andrea Tsvetanova added three more from the setter position.
 
Tsvetanova split time at setter with Andrea Serrano with Tsvetanova assisting on 23 kills to Serrano's six. Stafford, Ashley Roman and Coco Figueroa were credited with two kills each.
 
Defensively, Roman had a match-high 13 digs with Stafford adding seven more. Ibrahim and Palacios recorded two blocks as Coppin held the Cardinals to .110 hitting.
 
Set 1
  • Coppin opened the match on a 4-0 run as Roman recorded an ace and the Eagles got a kill by three different players.
  • The advantage stayed the same until CSU ran off three-straight points, punctuated by a kill from Hope Casel, forcing a Lamar timeout at 16-10.
  • Ibrahim slammed a kill coming out of the break and the Eagles extended their lead to 23-14 following back-to-back kills from Williams and Palacios, prompting another Cardinals timeout.
  • The teams traded kills before Cameron Lucas finished the set off with a kill.
  • CSU matched a season-high by hitting .517 for the set, recording just one error with 16 kills on 29 swings.
Set 2
  • Tsvetanova opened the set with a kill and Coppin forced a Lamar timeout, leading 7-2 after Ibrahim recorded back-to-back kills on overpasses.
  • Lamar got back on the board with a kill, but after a Cardinals error, Stafford served back-to-back aces to highlight a 6-0 run.
  • Coppin continued to pull away, taking a 19-5 lead after a pair of aces from Figueroa and Lamar called its second timeout of the frame.
  • CSU allowed the Cardinals back into it with a 9-1 run before Stafford stopped the drought with a pair of kills to help seal the set.
Set 3
  • The final set was close until Coppin went on a 7-1 run with Palacios recording three-straight points on a pair of kills and a block to make it 16-9.
  • Lamar pulled to within four points before Ibrahim and Stafford combined for a block and Stafford recorded a kill to clinch the match.
