Softball’s Vanessa Carrizosa Named to CSC Academic All-District Team

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Coppin State's Vanessa Carrizosa has been named to the College Sports Communicators 2022-23 Academic All-District Team, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.  This is the first time that Carrizosa has been recognized by the CSC, formerly known as CoSIDA.
 
To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be a key starter or reserve and have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average while having at least one season at their current institution. Carrizosa will move on to the ballot to decide the Academic All-America team which will be announced in early June.
 
A junior from Moreno Valley, Calif., Carrizosa was a MEAC All-Tournament selection and Third Team All-Conference honoree after going 15-14 with a 3.16 earned run average.  Carrizosa recorded 18 complete games and three shutouts while striking out 71 batters in 179.2 innings of work. 
 
Last week, Carrizosa led the Eagles to their first-ever MEAC Championship Game, going 4-2 with a 3.32 earned run average while starting all six games of the Tournament.  She struck out 19 batters in 38.0 innings which included a shutout of Howard in the Semifinals.  Carrizosa struck out a season-high six batters in the opening game of the Championship Series against North Carolina Central to force a decisive game two.
 
Carrizosa's season was one for the record books at Coppin State, ranking her third in wins, seventh in earned run average, ninth in starts and tenth in both appearances and innings pitched. In her career, she ranks fourth in CSU history in wins (19), fifth in ERA (4.56), appearances (75) and innings pitched (374.1), sixth in strikeouts (171), seventh in games started (58) and eighth in complete games (31).
