NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Celeste Gonzales has been named the MEAC Softball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the first weekly honor that Gonzales has received in her career.
A freshman from Moreno Valley, Calif., Gonzales hit .444 with six RBIs to go with a home run, a triple and a stolen base, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 record last week. Gonzales drove in the winning run with a sacrifice bunt at UMBC on Wednesday. In Saturday's game one win over Howard, Gonzales broke a 2-2 tie by hitting a three-run inside-the-park homer, and in game two, she blasted a two-run triple.
Gonzales is hitting .224 while leading Coppin with eight runs, four extra-base hits, six RBI and three stolen bases.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 28 in a 3 pm doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's. Coppin then heads to Norfolk State for a three-game MEAC series on April 1-2.
