BALTIMORE – Coppin State's men's basketball team fell in the final minutes to Wagner College, 62-59 on Wednesday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 1-9 on the season while the Seahawks evened their record at 4-4.
Freshman
Preist Ryan scored a season-high 18 points while
Justin Winston and
Camaren Sparrow added 15 points and 11 points, respectively. Winston and Sparrow led the Eagles with seven rebounds apiece.
Greg Spurlock contributed eight points, seven assists and three steals as Ryan was credited with five rebounds and three assists.
The Eagles outshot Wagner, 42.0% to 36.8%, but the Seahawks scored 16 second-chance points with 14 offensive rebounds. Wagner also scored 24 points off 18 CSU turnovers.
Four Seahawks scored in double figures with
Zaire Williams going for 21 points.
How it Happened
- Coppin held the lead for the majority of the game, regaining the advantage with 12:07 left in the first half on a jumper by Winston.
- After a three by Wagner, Ryan scored the next six points with a three along with an old-fashioned three-point play, giving the Eagles an 18-11 lead.
- The Eagles led by as many as 23-14 with 6:51 remaining following a three by Winston, but Wagner pulled back within two before Ryan scored the last six points of the half to put CSU on top, 31-28.
- Toto Fagbenle had a putback slam early in the second half, giving the Eagles their largest lead at 37-26 with 17:05 left in regulation.
- Wagner went on an 8-0 run to make it a one-possession game, but Coppin maintained a slim lead before the Seahawks went up 53-51 on a three by Williams with 4:19 left.
- Winston hit two free throws with 1:11 remaining, giving Coppin back the lead at 59-58, but Wagner answered with two free throws at its end of the floor.
- Coppin missed a jumper with an opportunity to take the lead and Wagner moved the ball to avoid a foul, hitting a layup with 12 seconds left to go up, 62-59.
- The Eagles were unable to get a game-tying shot attempt up after a timeout, allowing Wagner to pick up the win.
