Winston Leads All Scorers in Men’s Hoops’ Loss at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite a game-high 14 points from Justin Winston and 13 from Toto Fagbenle, the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at Navy, 75-52, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.  The Eagles now stand at 1-8 on the season while the Midshipmen improved to 2-4.

Winston made 4-of-10 shots from the floor with a pair of threes and added 4-of-5 from the stripe to lead all players in points. Fagbenle hit 5-of-9 from the line to give Coppin two players in double figures.

Don Don Ferguson scored a season-high nine points, making three 3-pointers and both Darryon Prescott and Greg Spurlock followed up with seven points apiece. Spurlock led the Eagles with six rebounds.

Coppin shot just 30.6% from the floor compared to Navy's 47.1 percent shooting. The Midshipmen were impressive inside, recording 32 points in the paint.  CSU also committed 20 turnovers which led to 24 points for the hosts.

How it Happened
  • Navy scored the first basket of the game before Winston answered with a three and Spurlock hit a mid-range jumper in transition to give Coppin an early 5-2 lead.
  • A pair of free throws by the Midshipmen cut the deficit to one before Winston extended the lead to 6-4 with 17:39 left in the half.
  • That was the last lead for the Eagles as Navy scored the next 19 points, holding CSU scoreless for nearly ten minutes.
  • Prescott scored the next five points for Coppin, including an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:59 remaining.
  • Spurlock hit another midrange jumper and also beat the buzzer on a three, cutting Navy's advantage to 36-23 at halftime.
  • That would be as close as the Eagles would get the remainder of the game with the Mids leading by as many as 75-47 with just over a minute to play.
