HARRISONBURG, Va. – Justin Winston led the Eagles with 13 points and eight rebounds as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at 20
th-ranked James Madison, 87-48, on Tuesday night at Atlantic Union Bank Arena. The Eagles fell to 1-12 on the season while Dukes remain undefeated at 11-0 overall.
Winston also had a pair of blocks and two steals while
Ryan Archey added nine points off the bench, including hitting the team's only 3-pointer of the night.
Greg Spurlock tallied six points, followed by
Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones with five and both
Camaren Sparrow and
Toto Fagbenle with four points apiece. Sparrow was credited with four steals.
For Dukes finished in double figures and James Madison outshot Coppin, 50.0% to 34.7%. The Eagles committed 30 turnovers which turned into 34 points and 28 fastbreak points for JMU.
How it Happened
- Sparrow put Coppin on top at the start with a jumper on the opening possession of the game, and Fagbenle hit two free throws after a JMU bucket to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
- James Madison scored the next five points before Munir-Jones sunk a midrange jumper to pull the Eagles within, 7-6.
- Coppin regained the lead at 12-11 with 14:32 remaining, following a pair of field goals by Spurlock, sandwiching a transition jumper by Sparrow.
- The Dukes responded with a 14-0 run to go up 25-14 until Archey stopped the drought with a three at the 8:55 mark.
- JMU kept extending its lead before the break, taking a 49-26 halftime lead and it led by as many as 84-44 in the second half.
Up Next: Coppin will be off until December 28 when it travels to face the Maryland Terrapins in a 7 pm tipoff on the B1G Network.
