Winston Posts Double Double as Men’s Hoops Falls at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Justin Winston posted a double-double and Coppin State's men's basketball team played virtually even with Georgetown in the second half during a 71-54 loss on Tuesday night at Capital One Arena.  The Eagles now stand at 1-11 on the season while the Hoyas improve to 6-4.

Winston led the Eagles with 18 points and 11 rebounds and was followed by Greg Spurlock with 14 points and Ryan Archey with 12. Preist Ryan added five points, three rebounds and matched Toto Fagbenle with a team-high three assists. Fagbenle also had a pair of blocks and Aa'Reyon Munir-Jones finished with four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists in the start.

In limited minutes, freshman Camaren Sparrow tallied two points, five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.

Georgetown also put three players in double figures, doubled Coppin in 3-point field goals (8-4) and made the most of its opportunities at the line (13-of-16) compared to just 4-of-5 from the Eagles.

With a hot-shooting second half, Coppin actually outshot the Hoyas, 39.0% to 38.5%, but Georgetown held a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points and recorded 22 points off 18 CSU turnovers.

How it Happened
  • Coppin led early as Sparrow came off a screen to hit a deep jumper before Spurlock drained a three from the wing, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
  • Five early blocks by Coppin kept the Navy & Gold in the game but Georgetown began to pull away, closing the half on a 14-3 run after Archey hit a jumper in transition.
  • Georgetown extended its lead to as many as 47-22 with 13:39 left in the second but Coppin came alive in the latter part of the period.
  • Archey hit a pair of fadeaway jumpers along with a dunk by Spurlock, highlighting an 8-2 Eagles run.
  • Georgetown stopped the spurt with a pair of free throws before Archey hit a three, followed by an old-fashioned three-point play by Ryan, cutting the deficit to 51-37 with 10:13 remaining.
  • Coppin pulled to as little as 60-47 on a three by Spurlock with 3:39 left in the game as Georgetown was able to hold off the Navy & Gold.
  • Over the second half, the Hoyas outscored Coppin by a slim 42-40 margin, but the Eagles shot 51.5 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
  • CSU also outrebounded Georgetown, 17-12 in the period.
Up Next: Coppin will have off for a week before traveling to 20th-ranked James Madison for a 7 pm start on Tuesday, December 19.
