NEW CASTLE, Del. – Coppin State's bowling team picked up a season-opening victory over 23
rd-ranked Delaware State over the weekend at the Bud Whitman Memorial, hosted by Chestnut Hill College at Bowlerama. The Eagles also picked up a traditional match victory over MEAC rival Howard later in the day on Saturday.
Victoria Davis led Coppin with a 163.00 traditional match average with 815 total pins over five matches, followed closely by
Shakyia Johnson with 805 pins, accumulating an average of 161.00.
Alexandria Madigan totaled 758 with
Taylor Penn at 730 and
Madison Muckle at 689.
Davis averaged a team-high 16.30 per frame and converted 60 percent of her makeable spares while matching Johnson with 18 strikes. The duo had a 66 percent and 60 percent overall fill percentage in traditional play. Penn recorded a 16.16 average per frame in baker matches and led the Eagles with a 71.2 percent overall fill percentage and was successful on 60.6 percent of makeable spares.
In the Eagles' victory over the Hornets, Penn rolled a 189 while Johnson and Davis finished with a 181 and 179, respectively. Penn also led the Navy & Gold with a 184 as Coppin was edged by the host Griffins. Johnson paced the Eagles against both Alvernia (175) and Howard as she rolled a team-high score of 197. Madigan finished with a team-high 163 against Molloy to close out traditional play.
Sunday featured Baker style play as the Eagles dropped matches to Wilmington, Long Island and Kutztown before falling in six games to Howard.
Coppin returns to the lanes on October 21-22 for the Golden Bear Invitational, hosted by Kutztown at Berks Lanes in Sinking Springs, Pa.
