BALTIMORE – Coppin State's men's basketball team fell to crosstown rival Morgan State, 83-66 on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles fall to 6-14 overall with a 1-2 mark in the MEAC while the Bears improve to 9-8 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in league play.
Inside the Numbers
- Nendah Tarke and Mike Hood finished with 20 points apiece while Tarke hit 10-of-15 from the line and finished a rebound shy of a double-double. Tarke also recorded three steals, two assists and a block.
- Hood hit three 3-pointers and 9-of-10 from the line.
- Justin Steers notched his third double-double of the season, recording 11 points and ten rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
- Sam Sessoms added nine points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds and Kam'Ron Blue chipped in with six points, all coming on second half dunks
- Morgan State got 30 points from Isaiah Burke and 16 points with 19 rebounds from Malik Miller and outshot Coppin, 42.9% to 31.6%.
- The Eagles made just four 3-pointers but climbed back into the game by making 26 free throws. However, MSU hit ten triples and 25 free throws while outrebounding the Eagles, 45-35.
How it Happened
- Morgan scored the game's first ten points and held Coppin without a field goal until Sessoms hit a jumper with 12:22 left to make the score, 22-5.
- The Bears led by as many as 36-14 with 6:30 left in the first before Hood scored the game's next eight points, five of which coming on free throws.
- Coppin cut the lead to single digits with a 11-1 run after layups from Sessoms and Steers, followed by a three from Hood at the 1:34 mark.
- MSU extended the lead back to 45-23 before Sessoms beat the buzzer with a three to make it a 45-36 deficit at the half.
- CSU closed to as little as 63-56 following a dunk by Tarke with 9:45 remaining, but Tarke was called for a technical and Morgan pulled away with a 12-1 run over the next three-plus minutes.
