BALTIMORE – Despite a school record 36 digs from Ashley Roman, Coppin State's volleyball team fell to American University, 3-1 inside the PEC Arena Tuesday evening. The Coppin State Eagles drop to 2-6 while the America Eagles remain unbeaten at 6-0.
Roman broke her own school-record for digs in a single-match, besting the 32 digs she recorded twice last season against Delaware State and North Carolina Central. She also moved into sixth place in MEAC history with 1,486 career digs.
Ammaarah Williams recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 22 digs, while leading the team with two aces. Miajavon Coleman also finished with a double-double with 13 kills and ten digs. Andrea Tsvetanova tallied double digits in digs (16) along with 40 assists and an ace. Ahzhi Coleman contributed nine kills with a .444 efficiency along with four blocks. Hope Casel matched with four blocks and chipped in seven kills. Geraldyn Palacios added three blocks and four kills.
Coppin secured a win in the first set, 25-19. After several lead exchanges at the start of the set, American struggled to contain Coppin as it went on three 3-0 runs throughout the set. Ahzhi Coleman started off all three runs with a kill, then carried out by her teammates. Ahzhi Coleman, Casel, and Miajavon Coleman scored consecutive kills off assists from Tsvetanova to create a seven-point lead, and shortly later turned into a 25-19 victory.
In a tightly wound second set, Williams scored three straight points for Coppin to bring a tie at 12. Coleman chipped in a pair of kills followed by another kill from Williams for a three-point advantage. American responded with a 5-0 run to close the set for a 25-22 win over Coppin.
Williams, Coleman, and Palacios scored all the points for Coppin in the third set for a 25-11 deficit. After trailing by ten in set four, the Eagles bridged the gap with a 4-0 run featuring a pair of kills by Ahzhi Coleman and Williams. American had game point at 24-15, however Coppin held tight and went on 5-0 run with consecutive kills from Miajavon Coleman and Williams, topped off with an ace from Tsvetanova. American ended up winning the set 25-20.
Up Next: Coppin State will travel to Alabama State this weekend, September 9-10 for the ISTAP HBCU Challenge. The Eagles take on ASU at 4 pm and Alabama A&M at 8:30 on Friday before clashing with Alcorn State at 11 am on Saturday.
