Volleyball Sweeps Archrival Morgan State to Win Third-Straight MEAC Match

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team recorded nine blocks and held Morgan State to a -.047 hitting percentage in a 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-16) MEAC victory on Friday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles now stand at 12-7 overall and 3-0 in league play while the Bears fall to 2-15 with a 1-2 mark in the MEAC.

Inside the Numbers
  • Andrea Tsvetanova recorded 32 assists and seven digs and added a pair of aces while quarterbacking the offense to a .314 hitting percentage.  Tsvetanova broke the CSU single-season record for aces, held by Candis Johnson ('01) and now hands an NCAA-leading 58 aces.
  • Ashley Roman tallied a match-high 16 digs and with a pair of aces moved into the top ten in CSU history with 82 aces.  She also passed North Carolina A&T's Ashley Johnson for second place on the MEAC all-time list with 1,689 digs.
  • Miajavon Coleman led all players with ten kills on .217 hitting while the middle blocking combination of Yaniris Miller-Green (nine) and Geraldyn Palacios (seven) combined for 16 kills on .636 hitting.
  • Palacios led the Eagles with six blocks, followed by Ammaarah Williams with five.
  • Hope Casel chipped in with an errorless six kills on 13 swings and matched Miller-Green and Tsvetanova with two blocks. Laila Ibrahim also had a block.
  • Kennedy Beatty got the start in the back row and contributed with five digs, two aces and two assists.
How it Happened
  • Following a Morgan service error to start the game, Tsvetanova scored the first point for the Eagles with an ace to tie the school single-season record. After a pair of Bears errors, Casel added a kill to make it a 5-0 score.
  • The Bears scored three of the next four points to pull within 6-3 before Coppin scored eight straight which featured five blocks apiece from Palacios and Williams.
  • CSU continued to pull away and closed the set with a kill from Williams and an ace by Roman.
  • It looked like Coppin would run away early in the second set but Morgan went on a 5-0 run to cut the CSU advantage to 14-13.
  • Coppin regrouped with six-straight points as Casel recorded two kills and a block during the spurt to make it a 20-13 score and the Eagles took a commanding 2-0 lead following a kill from Palacios before she combined with Tsvetanova for a block.
  • Coppin held an early five-point lead in the third set, but once again the Bears came back to pull within a single point.
  • Like the set before, Coppin pulled away with a long run as Coleman and Miller-Green recorded a pair of kills apiece to take a 21-12 lead.
  • A kill from Coleman gave Coppin its first match-point, and after a pair of Bears kills, Kiana Polk hammered home a kill for the win.
Up Next: Coppin returns to action on Friday, October 7 when it hosts Norfolk State to wrap up a five-match homestand.
