Hope Casel Earns MEAC Volleyball Player of the Week; Tsvetanova, Roman Also Earn Weekly Awards

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Hope Casel has been named the MEAC Volleyball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.  This is the first weekly award of Casel's career while Andrea Tsvetanova and Ashley Roman earned Setter of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
 
A sophomore from Tyler, Texas, Casel led the Eagles to a 2-1 record last week with conference wins over South Carolina State and North Carolina Central. Casel averaged 3.1 kills per set and totaled eight blocks while hitting .316 across 12 sets played.  She hit over .300 in all three matches, starting with a 13 kill, 5 block effort against UMBC to open the week. Casel followed with ten kills and two blocks in a sweep of the Bulldogs before hitting a season-best .333 with 14 kills and a block in a five-set win over NC Central.
 
Tsvetanova put up 9.7 assists and 1.8 digs per set while adding six aces in 11 sets last week. A senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova opened the stretch with 32 assists, eight digs and two blocks against UMBC before opening MEAC play with 25 assists and three aces in a sweep of South Carolina State. In Sunday's five-set win over NC Central, the nation's leader in total aces ands assists had 50 helpers, seven digs, a career-high five kills and three aces.
 
Roman broke the CSU all-time record for career digs against NC Central and now sits third in MEAC history with 1,673 career digs.  A senior from Isabela, Puerto Rico, Roman averaged 4.6 digs in three matches this past week, including 21 against the Eagles and 19 in a midweek match against UMBC.  In just two sets against South Carolina State, Roman put up 11 digs.  Roman also played a factor on the offensive end, recording nine aces with two against UMBC, a career-high four against South Carolina State and three against NC Central.
 
CSU (11-7, 2-0 MEAC) returns to the court on Friday, September 30 when it hosts archrival Morgan State in a 7 pm start at PEC Arena.
