BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team's seven-match winning streak came to an end as it was defeated by local rival UMBC, 3-1, on Tuesday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles now stand at 9-7 going into conference play later this week.
Inside the Numbers
- Hope Casel led the Eagles with 13 kills and five blocks while hitting .308 on 26 swings.
- Ammaarah Williams added seven kills while Miajavon Coleman and Yaniris Miller-Green recorded seven kills apiece. Miller-Green matched Casel with five blocks.
- Geraldyn Palacios returned to the lineup and tallied three kills and four blocks.
- Andrea Tsvetanova assisted on 32 of the team's 39 kills and added eight digs as Coppin was outhit, .266 to .100.
- Ashley Roman finished with a team-high 19 digs along with a pair of aces. Coleman and Williams were both credited with nine digs.
How it Happened
- Coppin got off to an auspicious start with back-to-back kills from Coleman and Casel to open the match, but UMBC scored three-straight to take the lead.
- The teams traded leads until the Retrievers got back-to-back kills to go on top 18-16. Miller-Green cut the deficit in half with a kill before UMBC scored seven-straight to win the opener.
- CSU overcame a 3-0 deficit and scored five-straight points which included back-to-back blocks from Casel and Miller-Green before a kill by Williams.
- UMBC regained the lead, extending its advantage to as many as 11-8, but a couple of 4-1 runs by the Eagles gave them a 22-19 lead.
- After a CSU service error made it a two-point game, the Eagles got kills from Coleman and Casel sandwiching a block from Casel and Miller-Green to tie the match at 1-1.
- With Copping leading, 10-9 after a block by Tsvetanova and Palacios, UMBC answered with seven-straight points to take a 16-10 lead.
- The Eagles crawled back into it, pulling to within a single point three times before the Retrievers closed it out with three-straight kills.
- UMBC never trailed in the fourth and final set, pulling away with a 11-2 run midway through the frame.
