Volleyball Sweeps South Carolina State in MEAC Opener

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team hit a season-high .394 in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-17) victory over South Carolina State in the MEAC opener for both teams on Friday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles now stand at 10-7 overall on the season.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Hope Casel led all players with ten kills while hitting .300 and added four digs and a pair of blocks.
  • Ammaarah Williams recorded eight kills on 12 swings without committing an error and had a pair of blocks.
  • Miajavon Coleman chipped in with six kills while Geraldyn Palacios recorded five and Yaniris Miller-Green finished with four with Palacios and Miller-Green tallying three blocks apiece. Ahzhi Coleman also had three kills while Kiana Polk finished with two and both Zoe Chin and Ashley Roman adding one apiece.
  • Roman led all players with 11 digs in just two sets along with four service aces.  Andrea Tsvetanova also played just two sets but came away with 25 assists and three aces.
  • In the third set alone, Ayanna Pharoah recorded ten assists and two aces.
  • Coppin held the Bulldogs to a -.015 hitting percentage as the Eagles pulled their starters for the final set.
  • Coppin's .394 hitting percentage was its best in a match since October 27, 2019 when it hit .410 against South Carolina State.
 
First Set
  • Coppin hit .364 in the first set, pulling away with a 6-1 run midway through the frame with back-to-back aces from Tsvetanova and a kill from Roman in the back row.
  • After a Bulldogs kill made it a 16-11 score, the Eagles closed it out with nine-straight points which included three aces from Roman before Williams recorded a block and a kill.
 
Second Set
  • A 6-0 run by Coppin midway through the set gave the Eagles an insurmountable 15-7 lead. 
  • Back-to-back points by the Bulldogs cut the deficit to six points but CSU scored five-straight with another Roman ace and a pair of kills from Miller-Green.
  • After trading points, Coppin sealed it with kills from both Williams and Miajavon Coleman.
  • The Eagles hit a whopping .762 in the set, recording 17 kills on 21 swings with just one error.
 
Third Set
  • Coppin pulled most of its starters but it did not matter as it held South Carolina State to a -.100 hitting percentage in the frame.
  • The Eagles went on a 6-1 run to put some distance between the teams as Casel tallied a pair of kills.  Pharoah also tallied an ace while Ahzhi Coleman and Laila Ibrahim combined for a block.
  • Polk added back-to-back kills for the Eagles to keep the lead at six before another 4-0 run put the set out of reach.
  • A kill from Chin along with an ace from Pharoah gave CSU its largest lead of the set before Ahzhi Coleman put the match away with a kill.
