NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Andrea Tsvetanova was named the MEAC Volleyball Setter of the Week while
Yaniris Miller-Green earned Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the second time this season that Tsvetanova earned the award while this is the first weekly honor of Miller-Green's career.
A senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova was named the Most Valuable Player of the Liberty University Tournament after averaging 9.67 assists, 1.17 service aces and 1.83 digs per set, leading the Eagles to a Tournament title. Tsvetanova also put up 29 assists and nine digs in a straight-set victory at George Washington University to open the week.
In Coppin's five-set win against Eastern Michigan, Tsvetanova notched her sixth double-double of the season, recording 42 assists and 11 digs while adding six service aces and a pair of kills. Tsvetanova put up 39 assists, seven digs and four aces against the host Flames before erupting for 35 assists and another four aces in a sweep of Radford.
Earlier today, Tsvetanova was named the American Volleyball Scouting Report (AVSR) Player of the Week.
For the season, Tsvetanova leads NCAA Division I with 50 service aces and sits third in aces per set (0.86) and total assists (518). Tsvetanova's 8.93 assists per set are second in the MEAC. In just 42 career matches, Tsvetanova has recorded 101 service aces and 1,348 assists to rank fourth in CSU history and her 50 service aces already are just seven off the school's single season record which was set by Candis Johnson in 2001.
Miller-Green was named the Best Blocker at the Liberty University Tournament after tallying 19 blocks (1.58 per set) in thee wins over the weekend. A graduate student from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Miller-Green was also a major factor on the offensive end with 24 kills on .327 hitting.
For the week, Miller-Green was credited with 26 blocks (1.73 per set) and 32 kills (2.13 per set) with a .385 hitting percentage. Miller-Green started the week with an errorless eight kills on 13 swings (.615 hitting percentage) with a then career-high seven blocks in a sweep at George Washington.
Miller-Green opened the weekend with five kills and a Liberty Arena record 11 blocks in a five-set victory over Eastern Michigan. She followed up with nine kills without an error on 20 swings (.450 hitting percentage) along with eight blocks in a win over the host Flames. The 6-foot-1 opposite/middle hitter closed the weekend by matching a season-high with ten kills on .500 hitting in a sweep over Radford.
Coppin has now won seven-straight and set a school-record with nine non-conference victories. The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, September 20 when they host local rival UMBC in its final match before opening MEAC play against South Carolina State on Friday night.
