Volleyball Picks Up Five-Set Victory Over Eastern Michigan at Liberty Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Ammaarah Williams notched a double-double with a season-high 18 kills and 11 digs to lead the Coppin State volleyball team to a 3-2 (25-20, 25-11, 20-25, 23-25, 16-14) win over Eastern Michigan on Friday afternoon at Liberty Arena.  CSU moves to 7-6 on the season with their first-ever victory against a team from the Mid-American Conference.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Ammaarah Williams hit .200 on 55 swings and added four blocks and a pair of aces.
  • Miajavon Coleman recorded 15 kills on 41 attempts for a .268 hitting percentage and was credited with seven digs and three blocks. 
  • Hope Casel was also in double figures with ten kills to go with four blocks.
  • Andrea Tsvetanova notched another double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs.  The Nation's leader in aces added another six to her total and now has 42 on the season.
  • Elsewhere on the defensive end, Ashley Roman tallied 25 digs and Yaniris Miller-Green had 11 blocks with two solo and nine assists.
  • Coppin outhit EMU, .163 to .110 which included a dominant second set where the Eagles hit .212 while holding Eastern to -.176 hitting.
How it Happened
First Set
  • Coppin overcame an 8-4 deficit by scoring six of the next seven points after a pair of kills from Casel along with three-straight kills from Williams, Tsvetanova and Ahzhi Coleman.
  • The teams traded leads until CSU wrapped up the set with five-straight points after two kills and an ace from Williams, an Eastern attack error and a kill from Miajavon Coleman.
Second Set
  • CSU scored the first nine points of the set and never looked back as Miajavon Coleman recorded a pair of kills, Tsvetanova a pair of aces and a kill with two blocks from Miller-Green.
  • With Coppin leading, 14-6, CSU recorded another five-straight points to pull away with another two points from Miller-Green.
  • Ahzhi Coleman put the frame away with a huge kill of another assist from Tsvetanova.
Third Set
  • EMU opened a commanding 18-10 lead midway through the set with a 7-1 run before a kill from Williams put an end to the spurt.
  • Coppin pulled to as close as 22-18 on an ace from Tsvetanova before teams traded points to wrap it up.
Fourth Set
  • CSU's 4-0 lead evaporated as EMU went on a run to keep it close.  A pair of 3-0 runs by Eastern gave it the lead at 21-18.
  • A pair of EMU errors, followed by an ace from Tsvetanova and a block from Miller-Green and Miajavon Coleman gave CSU back the lead at 22-21.
  • The teams traded leads before Eastern scored the last three points to force a deciding set.
Fifth Set
  • Coppin got out to an 8-3 lead before the teams switched sides of the floor with Casel leading the way with a kill and two blocks.
  • That advantage shrunk to 8-7 before Coppin extended the lead to 10-7.
  • Eastern regained the lead at 13-12 before Casel kept Coppin alive with back-to-back kills, tying it up at 14-14.
  • Roman gave CSU its first match-point with an ace before Casel hammered home a kill for the winner.
Up Next: Coppin returns to action for Day Two of the Liberty Invitational with matches against the host Flames at 10 am and Radford at 12:30 pm.  The clash with Liberty will be televised on ESPN+.
