WASHINGTON, D.C. – Miajavon Coleman and
Yaniris Miller-Green combined for 19 kills without committing an error, leading Coppin State's volleyball team to an impressive 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-14) victory at George Washington University on Tuesday night at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center. With the win, the Eagles now stand at 6-6 on the season while the Colonials fall to 3-7.
Coleman finished with a match-high 11 kills on 22 swings for a .500 hitting percentage while Miller-Green tallied eight kills on 13 swings to hit a whopping .615. Miller-Green also recorded a match-high seven blocks with Coleman adding four of her own to go with six digs.
Hope Casel also contributed with eight kills, followed by
Ahzhi Coleman with five and
Ammaarah Williams with three.
Andrea Tsvetanova assisted on 29 of the team's 37 kills and added a team-high nine digs Coppin outhit GW, .267 to .157. While being credited with just eight digs,
Ashley Roman added five assists and a pair of aces.
After falling behind, 7-4 in the opening set, Coppin regrouped to tie the score at 8-8 with a kill from Miller-Green and aces from Roman and
Kennedy Beatty. The teams traded leads until a 3-0 run by the Eagles with kills from Tsvetanova and
Ahzhi Coleman opened a 20-17 advantage. GW pulled to within two a couple times before Miller-Green finished the Colonials off with a block and a kill.
Miller-Green had a pair of kills to open the second set, giving Coppin a 5-2 lead, but GW answered with seven-straight points to go on top, 9-5. The Eagles slowly cut into the deficit before scoring five unanswered points, three coming off Colonials errors to pull ahead, 16-13. GW tied the match twice at before back-to-back kills from Williams and
Miajavon Coleman killed the hosts' momentum and Casel recorded a kill for the win.
A 4-0 and 6-1 run by Coppin helped the Navy & Gold pull away for a decisive victory in the third and final set. Led by
Miajavon Coleman, who recorded five kills on just seven swings in the frame, Coppin hit .370 in the set compared to just .031 for GW. Casel and Miller-Green also combined for five kills without an error in the 25-14 win.
The Eagles face a monumental test over the weekend in Lynchburg, Va., at the Liberty Invitational. Coppin opens with Eastern Michigan on Friday, September 16 at 3 pm before taking on the host Flames at 10 am, and Radford at 12:30 pm on Saturday.
