NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Miajavon Coleman has been named the MEAC Volleyball Player of the Week while
Andrea Tsvetanova received Setter of the Week honors, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the ninth time that Coleman has earned the Player of the Week award and the fifth for Tsvetanova.
A graduate student from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman posted three-straight double-doubles to open the season, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 record. Coleman was named to the Aggie-Spartan Invitational All-Tournament team after recording 48 kills (3.43 per set) on .266 hitting along with 33 digs (2.36 per set) and six blocks.
Coleman tallied 18 kills with ten digs in Coppin's season-opening victory at North Carolina A&T on Friday night. The following day, Coleman picked up 17 kills with just two errors on 50 swings to hit .300 along with 11 digs and career-high six blocks in a five-set match at UNC Greensboro. Coleman wrapped up the Tournament with 13 kills, 12 digs and another two blocks in a win over Bethune-Cookman.
The CSU all-time leader with 1,435 kills, Coleman ranks seventh in MEAC history in the category. Coleman is also seventh in school history in digs and cracked the school's top ten in blocks (145) this weekend.
Tsvetanova notched a pair of double-doubles and finished just shy of a third over the weekend, tallying 9.86 assists per set and 2.57 digs per set while racking up 12 aces and six blocks. Her 12 aces through the weekend currently leads all of NCAA Division I.
A senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova recorded 51 assists and 17 digs to go with three aces and two blocks in the win against the Aggies. Opening the second day against the Spartans, Tsvetanova finished with 42 assists and ten digs before going for 45 assists, nine digs, five aces and four blocks against the Wildcats.
The Eagles (2-1) welcome crosstown rival Loyola Maryland (1-2) to PEC Arena on Tuesday, August 30 at 6 pm.
