Hamberg Named MEAC Pitcher of the Week; Johnson Receives Rookie of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Jordan Hamberg was named the MEAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.  This is the third weekly award for Hamberg this season, but the first he was recognized solely for his pitching. Additionally, Justin Johnson received the Rookie of the Week award for the second time.
 
A sophomore from South Plainfield, N.J., Hamberg threw a five-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 13 batters in Coppin's 2-0 victory over Norfolk State on Sunday. Hamberg retired ten-straight at one point and 13 of the final 14 batters he faced in the seven-inning affair.
 
At the plate, Hamberg hit .333 with a double, a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in five games. 
 
Hamberg was selected as the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week last week while also being one of 13 players nationally to be named to the Award's watchlist for its yearly honor.
 
On the mound this season, Hamberg is 4-1 with a 2.93 earned run average while striking out 53 batters in 40.0 innings of work. Hamberg is holding batters to just a .215 batting average and leads the MEAC in ERA, strikeouts, strikeouts per nine innings (11.93) and wins.
 
Hamberg is also hitting .338 with five doubles, a triple, and 20 RBI while slugging a team-high four home runs.  He is also a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts.
 
Johnson was also dominant on the mound this week, giving up just one run on one hit while striking out nine in 5.0 innings of relief.  A native of Easton, Pa., Johnson threw two perfect innings at Mount St. Mary's with three strikeouts before recording the three-inning save against Norfolk State where he fanned six Spartans.
 
For the season, Johnson is 1-1 with three saves while recording a 4.67 earned run average.  Johnson has struck out 31 batters in 27.0 innings and is holding hitters to just a .224 average.
 
Coppin (13-20) sits atop the MEAC with a 9-7 record in conference play and travels to Maryland Eastern Shore for a four-game series on April 14-16.  Thursday's single game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 12 pm doubleheader on Friday and a 12 pm single game on Saturday. All four games will be played at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
