Coppin Will Play Their Last Away Game of the Regular Season Against UMES Before Hosting Delaware State

Baltimore, MD – Coppin State's women's basketball team will travel to Eastern Shore Maryland to battle against UMES for a 2 pm tipoff on Saturday, February 26, which can be watched live on Flo Sports.  The matchup against the Hawks will be the last away game for the Eagles in the regular season.

Jaia Alexander leads the conference with 15.8 points per game and ranked second in rebounding averaging 7.6 RPG.  Alexander is second in the MEAC in free-throw percentage at 79.8 percent. Aliyah Lawson is putting up 12.4 points per game which advances her to fourth in the MEAC.  Lawson is top in the conference for three-point field goals per game  (2.7)  and third in three-point field goal percentage with a 33.2 efficiency.   Lawson is fourth in assists, averaging 2.9 a game. Mossi Staples  places top ten in scoring with 10.7 points per game.  She placed second in the conference in steals with (2.6), and third in assists with 3.1 APG.  Jalynda Salley is second the MEAC in field-goal percentage, shooting the ball with a 50.7 efficiency.  She ranks top ten in in the conference in rebounds with 5.7 RPG, while placed third in offensive boards, averaging 2.7.  Salley ties for sixth in blocks (0.9). Colleen Bucknor is averaging 6.3 rebounds per game which puts her at seventh in the MEAC, and placed in the top ten in block, totaling 20 for the season.    
  
Climbing the Charts    
Jalynda Salley surpassed Yvette Larkins for third all-time at CSU and now has 99 career blocks.  Salley surpassed Chance Graham after being tied in fourth with 97. Aliyah Lawson broke history and passed Rashasa Suber at fourth place in single season threes (58). Lawson now has 64 threes for the season and is nine threes away from matching Thelma Lyles in second all time with 73. Lawson holds second all-time at CSU with 149 career threes. Jaia Alexander's 35 piece career high  game against Del. State on February 2 ties for fourth in CSU history for most points scored in single game.   
  
Last Time Out 
Coppin defeated Norfolk 56-48 at home to cause a three-way tie for first in the conference with Howard and Norfolk. Two days later the Eagles traveled to Washington D.C. to face Howard for a battle for the top of the conference. Howard snuck away with a 70-67 victory after trailing through the majority of the second half.  

Mossi Staples earned defensive player of the week, averaging 8.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.5 steals in a pair of games last week. Alexander had a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds in the victory against Norfolk State. Aliyah Lawson totaled 33 points for the week with an outstanding performance against Howard with 20 points, and a whopping four three pointers. Jalynda Salley went off for.12 points and a team high eight rebounds against Howard.  

About the Matchups 
Coppin is in a three-way tie with Morgan and Howard for second in the conference with a record of 8-3 in conference play, while UMES stands at fifth at 5-6. A win for Coppin would solidify a second place standing. In the last matchup between the two teams, Coppin Swept UMES with the largest scoring margin of conference play (29 points).  

Delaware State seeks their first win of the season. Coppin was one of three single digit losses that the Hornets had for the season. Delaware State's assistant coach Jazmone Turner was the former associate head coach at Coppin State for three seasons (2017-20).  


Scouting the Hawks 
UMES made a turnaround and is on two game win streak against South Carolina State and North Carolina Central. Amanda Carney and Brooklyn Bailey are averaging 8 points a-piece. In their last matchup against North Carolina Central, Arianna led three Hawks in double digits with 16 points and a team high 7 rebounds.  


Scouting the Hornets 
Janasia Law leads the hornets with 11.8 points per game, added to 5.1 rebounds per game. Alexis Morgan is the Hornets' second leading scorer with 10.2 points per game, and leads the team in assists, totaling 45 for the season. Zoe Holmes is putting up 7.9 points and a team high of 9 rebounds a game. Freshman Unique Miller has made some noise this season with 7.8 points and ranked third in the conference in rebounds per game (7.1).  
 
Up Next: Coppin will host cross-town rival Morgan State for senior night to mark the last game of conference play on Thursday, March 3 for a 5:30 tip-off. After that, the Eagles will head down to the Norfolk Virginia for the MEAC tournament, hosted in the Scope Arena on March 9, 2022.
