FAIRFAX, Va. – Coming off a double overtime victory two days ago, the Coppin State men's basketball team fell to George Mason, 91-53 on Friday evening at EagleBank Arena. The Eagles now stand at 5-10 on the season while Mason improves to 8-5.
How it Happened
- George Mason opened the game on a 9-0 run before Sam Sessoms drove in for a layup at 17:26 to put Coppin on the board.
- The Patriots then went on another 9-0 run and a pair of 8-0 spurts to open a large lead as CSU was unable to put together back-to-back baskets.
- While not much fell for Coppin in the first half, it was exactly the opposite for the hosts as the Patriots outshot the Eagles, 59.4% to 24.1%. The Eagles made just 1-of-11 3-pointers to George Mason's 9-of-16 and CSU hit just 5-of-10 from the line.
- Coppin shot at an improved 37.0 clip in the second half but were unable to sustain a run to get back into the game as George Mason outscored the Eagles, 38-33.
- For the game, GMU outshot Coppin, 50.0% to 29.8% while making 14 3-pointers compared to just 3 for the Eagles. Mason outrebounded Coppin, 52-26.
Player Statistics
- Sam Sessoms tied for a game-high 17 points while also recording a team-high six rebounds three assists and three steals while making 6-of-13 field goals and 5-of-5 free throws.
- Mike Hood was the only other CSU player in double figures, scoring 11 points while Nendah Tarke and Justin Steers had nine points apiece. Steers hit 7-of-9 from the stripe and blocked three shots.
- Daniel Titus chipped in with five points and added a pair of steals.
- Five Patriots scored in double figures, led by Victor Bailey, Jr., with 17 points.
