RICHMOND, Va. – Foul trouble plagued Coppin State's men's basketball team in the first half and it carried over in the second as the Eagles fell at Richmond, 83-65 on Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Coppin now stands at 5-11 on the season while the Spiders improve to 7-6.
Inside the Numbers
- Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Kam'Ron Blue who finished with a season-high 16 points while matching a season-best with four 3-pointers. Blue also pulled down five rebounds.
- Sam Sessoms added 13 points and four assists as he picked up two early fouls and missed several minutes in the second half with four fouls. Sessoms hit 5-of-11 from the floor.
- Mike Hood and Nendah Tarke tallied 11 and ten points, respectively, with Hood making 5-of-6 from the line and Tarke leading CSU with seven rebounds.
- In just his second game of the season, Greg Spurlock got the start and recorded seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
- Justin Steers and Alex Rojas combined for eight points while Daniel Titus grabbed six rebounds.
- Richmond, who was led by Tyler Burton's 20 points, outshot CSU, 50.0% to 44.4%, and made 18-of-24 from the line compared to the Eagles' 9-of-13.
How it Happened
- The first half featured eight ties despite Richmond scoring the first eight points of the game as Coppin battled back and took a 13-12 lead following three-straight 3-pointers by Sessoms, Tarke and Blue.
- Richmond retook the advantage with a three on the ensuing possession and neither took led by more than four points for the final 12 minutes of the period.
- Following a pair of Richmond free throws with nine seconds left, Blue took an inbounds pass from Hood and sprinted all the way down the court for a tomahawk slam, tying the score at 38-38.
- The Spiders hit two free throws to close the half, taking a lead into the break before scoring the first five points of the second half.
- Spurlock scored the game's next four points on back-to-back layups off dimes from Sessoms, cutting the deficit to 45-42 with 17:40 left in regulation, but that was as close as the Eagles got the rest of the way.
- Richmond went on a 12-3 run over the next 4:19 and kept a double digit lead the remainder of the game.
