Howard Outhits Volleyball as Eagles Fall in Four Sets

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard University's volleyball team outhit Coppin State, .398 to .202 as the Eagles' four-match winning streak ended in a 3-1 loss to the Bison on Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium.  Coppin now stands at 13-8 overall and remain in first place in the MEAC at 4-1 while HU improves to 9-7 on the year and 3-1 in league play.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Ahzhi Coleman led the Eagles with a career-high 11 kills on 18 swings to hit .389 for the match.
  • Hope Casel hit .450 on the day, recording nine kills without an error on 20 swings. Ammaarah Williams and Geraldyn Palacios each had eight kills while Miajavon Coleman added five kills.
  • Andrea Tsvetanova notched a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs while adding an ace as Ashley Roman led all players with 14 digs.
  • Three Bison players had at least ten kills with Rya McKinnon tallying 13, Jennifer Bolden with 12 and Tamar Wells with ten.
How it Happened
  • Coppin won the first set, 25-21 as it hit .379 for the frame despite Howard's .324 hitting percentage.
  • The Eagles trailed, 16-14 before going on a 4-1 run with a pair of kills from Miajavon Coleman and an ace from Tsvetanova.
  • After an error tied the score at 18-18, the Eagles scored five of the next six as Williams put together a pair of kills to pull away.
  • CSU went on a 5-0 run midway through the set to take a 11-9 lead before Howard answered with two-straight. After a service error, the Bison scored nine of the next ten and did not look back.
  • Coppin held a 12-9 advantage in the third after a kill from Ahzhi Coleman before Howard went on a long run.
  • CSU managed to tie the score at 22-22 after a kill and an ace from Williams but the Bison scored three of the final four points to win the set.
  • After two kills from Ahzhi Coleman to open the fourth set, Howard never trailed the rest of the way as it went on a 5-0 run to open a 11-4 lead.
  • The Eagles kept battling, pulling to within, 12-10 following another kill from Ahzhi Coleman, followed by a pair of aces from Gabi Theut.
  • It was all Howard from then on as the Bison went on a 10-2 spurt.

Up Next: Coppin will look to regroup as it travels to Maryland Eastern Shore for a 6 pm start on Friday, October 14.
