BALTIMORE – Behind 13 kills from
Yaniris Miller-Green and nine more from both
Miajavon Coleman and
Ammaarah Williams, the Coppin State volleyball team swept Howard, 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-21) in a battle for first place in the MEAC on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles, who split the season series with the Bison, stand alone in first place at 19-8 overall and 10-1 in league play.
With the win, head coach
Tim Walsh recorded his 100
th all-time career victory. Walsh has gone 75-89 in his six seasons at Coppin while recording an impressive 46-26 (.639) in MEAC play. Over the last five years, the Eagles are 71-63 (.530) with a 42-18 (.700) record in conference games.
Inside the Numbers
- Miller-Green led all players with her 13 kills while hitting .333 on 27 swings along with a block.
- Coleman hit .259 with just two errors on 27 attempts and added four blocks, five digs and an ace.
- Williams finished a kill shy of a double-double while hitting .190 and was credited with a pair of blocks.
- Geraldyn Palacios hit .500 with five kills and Ahzhi Coleman also recorded five kills and a match-high five blocks.
- Andrea Tsvetanova assisted on 32 of the Eagles' 41 kills and Coppin outhit Howard, .263 to .135. Tsvetanova finished with eight digs and served a pair of aces, setting a MEAC record in the process with the most aces in a season (81) since 2008 when the NCAA switched to a 25-point scoring system.
- Ashley Roman continues to add to her CSU school-record for digs with 15 as she is quickly approaching the MEAC all-time record in the category.
- Rya McKinnon led Howard with ten kills while Tamar Wells finished with seven.
How it Happened
- Howard held a 10-6 lead in the opening set after a 4-0 run but CSU battled back to take the lead back at 13-12 following a 4-0 run of their own.
- After a Coppin error tied it at 13-13, the Eagles went on a 6-2 run which was erased with four consecutive Bison points, tying the score at 19-19.
- A kill by Palacios, an HU error and a block from the Coleman sisters gave the Eagles a 22-19 advantage and Miller-Green closed it out with a pair of kills.
- Howard got out to an early lead in the second, taking a 7-5 lead which promoted the Navy & Gold to call a timeout. The Bison got a service error after the stoppage but it was all Eagles from there.
- Coppin closed the second set on a 20-3 run which included 13-straight points. Miajavon Coleman and Miller-Green each picked up three kills over the stretch while Tsvetanova aced the Bison twice. After the Bison got a point on a kill, Ahzhi Coleman finished the frame with a kill.
- The Eagles hit .455 for the set with 13 kills while holding Howard to .000 hitting.
- The third set started like the first two, with Howard getting out to an early lead at 9-5, but Coppin was able to regroup and tie the score at 10-10.
- After trading points, the Eagles began to get some breathing room with a 4-0 run to go on top 17-13.
- Howard was able to pull within a single point three times over the rest of the set but a pair of kills from Miajavon Coleman and another from Miller-Green sealed it.
