Miajavon Coleman Makes More History as Volleyball Knocks Off Norfolk State, 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State volleyball's Miajavon Coleman made history with a double-double 16 kills and 17 digs as the Eagles defeated Norfolk State, 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-9)- on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.  With the win, Coppin improves to 18-8 overall and remains in first place in the MEAC with a 9-1 mark in league play.

A graduate student from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman moved into fourth place in MEAC history with 1,665 career kills, passing Howard's Khaila Donaldson ('18) and Arlene Mitchell ('06) of North Carolina A&T.  Coleman ranks second all-time among MEAC players in total kills since the 2008 season when the NCAA switched to a 25-point scoring system from 30 points.

Coleman also became the first CSU player to have both 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs and sits fifth in school-history with 1,006 digs.

Inside the Numbers
  • Coleman led six Eagles with double figures kills with her match-high 16 on the night with Ammaarah Williams following with 13 kills and ten digs for a double-double. Coleman also led all players with her 17 digs and hit .224 on 49 swings and served two aces.
  • Yaniris Miller-Green and Ahzhi Coleman both added ten kills with Coleman tallying a match-high seven blocks. Geraldyn Palacios chipped in with six kills and four blocks while Williams was credited with five blocks. Palacios finished with three blocks and Miajavon Coleman tallied two.
  • Andrea Tsvetanova notched another double-double with 49 assists and ten digs to go with four kills, two blocks and an ace.
  • In the back row, Ashley Roman finished with 13 digs while Kennedy Beatty recorded ten digs with a pair of aces.
  • Coppin outhit Norfolk State, .194 to .156 while hitting a whopping .318 in the deciding set while holding the Spartans to a .000 percentage in the frame.

How it Happened
  • Coppin was never really threatened in the opener, pulling away with an 8-1 run early in the frame to go on top, 12-5. Norfolk got no closer than three points the rest of the way as the Eagles hit .250 in the session.
  • The Eagles allowed the Spartans to put together a series of runs in the next two sets and paid the price as the hosts took a commanding, 2-1 lead.
  • CSU rallied from a 17-13 deficit in the fourth to force a deciding set, tying the set at 22-22.  Norfolk went ahead, 23-22 but Coppin scored the final three points which included a kill from Miller-Green.
  • In the fifth, Coppin used a 5-1 run to pull away which featured three-straight kills from Miller-Green, Tsvetanova and Williams.
  • After a NSU kill, the Coleman sisters recorded three-straight kills to make it a 12-5 score. The Spartans scored four of the next five before Miajavon Coleman ended the match with a kill and an ace.
