BALTIMORE – Behind a double-double from
Andrea Tsvetanova, Coppin State's volleyball team was victorious in its home opener, 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-21) over George Washington University on Wednesday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles improve to 4-3 on the season while the Colonials fall to 0-6.
This was the first time in five matches that Coppin has defeated its rivals from our Nation's Capital.
Tsvetanova finished with 29 assists and ten digs while adding three aces and a pair of kills while directing the CSU offense to a .234 hitting percentage. Receiving the bulk of her sets were
Miajavon Coleman and
Paola Caten who tallied 11 kills and nine kills, respectively.
Jordan Celestine pounded down eight kills while hitting a whopping .583 on 12 swings.
Also on the attack,
Ahzhi Coleman tallied five kills and both
Sydney Hicks and
Hope Casel finished with four kills apiece.
On the defensive end,

Miajavon Coleman recorded eight, and Caten chipped in with seven. Caten matched Celestine with a team-high two blocks.
Coppin had the upperhand from the start, recording the first three points and taking a 9-4 lead on a kill from Caten. This caused GW to call a timeout and the Colonials responded with a 9-1 run midway through the frame and took a 20-17 lead. The Eagles called a timeout trailing, 22-19 and kills from Caten, Celestine and
Miajavon Coleman tied the score at 23-23. GW held a set-point following a CSU error but back-to-back kills from
Ahzhi Coleman gave Coppin back the lead before a Colonials error sealed the win for the Eagles.
The Eagles scored the first three points once again in the second set, but this time ran away with it. Coppin maintained the advantage and held a 14-7 lead before GW called a timeout. Following the stoppage, the Colonials got no closer than six points and CSU closed the frame with four-straight points on kills by Caten,
Miajavon Coleman, Celestine as well as an ace from Caten.
Casel came up big down the stretch in the final set with a pair of kills midway through, giving Coppin a 19-16 advantage. After a GW error and a kill by Caten, the Colonials called timeout at 21-16 and was able to pull within 23-21. A kill by
Miajavon Coleman gave CSU its first match-point, and just after
Kyndall Johnson subbed in, she combined for a block with
Ahzhi Coleman for the game-winner.
Coppin returns to action on September 11-12 at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. The Eagles open the Tournament against Robert Morris on Friday at 1:30 pm and will take on UNC Greensboro (11 am) and the host Patriots (7 pm) on Saturday.
