ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Coppin State's volleyball team swept South Carolina State, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) in its MEAC opener on Friday night at Dukes Gymnasium. The Eagles now stand at 7-6 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 0-9.
Miajavon Coleman led all players with nine kills with just one error to hit .444 for the match while
Ahzhi Coleman added another six kills while hitting an impressive .417.
Sydney Hicks,
Jordan Celestine and
Hope Casel all had four kills as
Paola Caten chipped in with three.
Setter
Andrea Tsvetanova tallied 22 assists and a season-high eight service aces while recording six digs.
Ashley Roman was credited with a match-high nine digs as CSU outhit the Bulldogs, .368 to .111.
After falling behind, 2-0, Coppin ran off five-straight points and pulled away with another six-straight points midway through the set to take a 15-8 lead. Following a Bulldogs kills, the Eagles scored seven consecutive points and took the opener, 25-14.
The teams traded a couple points to open the second set until CSU turned a 10-6 advantage into a 20-6 lead with four Tsvetanova aces. South Carolina State made a small run but kills from Celestine and
Miajavon Coleman put a top to that, and
Genesis Hernandez finished the frame with an ace.
CSU opened the final set with five-straight points and cruised to a convincing 25-11 victory which was capped off by another ace from Hernandez and a kill by Casel.
Coppin will head North to face N.C. Central on Sunday, September 26 for a 1 pm MEAC start.
