BALTIMORE – Coppin State head bowling coach
Shaunita Middleton announced on Tuesday that
TaVera Johnson has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Eagles during the 2021-22 season. Johnson is the third commit signed by the Eagles for the upcoming season, joining
Jalyne Myers and
Temira White.
A native of Millersville, Md., Johnson was a standout the Virginia State Pepsi USBC Youth Championship, recording a pair of top ten performances as another top 20 effort. This past season, Johnson placed eighth overall in the State Finals while also averaging a 200 for her Youth League Tournament. Johnson also took fifth in 2018 and 16
th in 2019 at States.
"TaVera, also known as TJ, adds another element to our program that most teams don't have and that's giving us the ability to play on both sides of the lane because she's a lefty," said Middleton. "I'm very excited to welcome her to the Eagle family. She's ready to shake things up and show everyone what she can do, and with her work ethic and competitiveness, it won't take long."
Johnson on Choosing Coppin: "I am very excited to be bowling at Coppin State while experiencing and learning new things with my teammates. Coach Middleton stayed in constant contact and showed me what Coppin and the bowling program was all about. I'm ready for this journey and I just want to make my mom proud of me.
The Eagles, who open the season on October 16-17 at the Mount St. Mary's Shootout, are coming off a season where they won three matches against nationally ranked opponents and were named a NTCA All-Academic Team. Coppin earned votes in the NTCA Poll for the first time since the 2007-08 season and also picked up votes in the Final Poll.
