STATESBORO, Ga. – Coppin State's volleyball team finished 1-2 in the Bash in the Boro tournament hosted by Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon in Hanner Fieldhouse. Led by a pair of double-doubles from
Miajavon Coleman, the Eagles fell to GSU in four sets to open the day before a 3-0 loss to Presbyterian.
How it Happened vs. Georgia Southern
Coleman and
Paola Caten led the way for CSU in their second game of the tournament taking on host team Georgia Southern. Coleman and Caten both notched a double-double, finishing the match with 15 kills and 14 digs while Caten added 10 kills and 12 digs.
Andrea Tsvetanova led the way in assists with 36 while
Ashley Roman anchored the defense with 23 digs.
In set one, Georgia Southern took an early 2-0 lead before a kill by Caten brought the Eagles within one. A service error tied the game early on at 2-2 before Georgia Southern went on a small run. Coppin went on a 6-0 scoring run to tie the game at 22, and a kill by
Jordan Celestine sealed the deal for CSU, taking the set, 26-24.
In set two, Coppin went on a 5-0 start, but a service error caused the Eagles of Georgia Southern to get back into it. Southern took the second set, finishing the frame with a scoring run, 25-22.
The third set was back-and-forth before Georgia Southern took an early 10-7 lead.
Ahzhi Coleman had her fifth kill of the match to bring Coppin within two. Georgia Southern went on a small run before Coppin had back-to-back points to pull within four. Georgia Southern finished the set, 25-19, going up 2-1 on the match.
Coppin took the first point of the fourth set but Georgia Southern came right back to tie 1-1. Georgia Southern went on a 4-0 run before a kill by Celestine snapped it, making the score, 14-6. Georgia Southern went on an 8-0 run to finish the match 25-9.
How it Happened vs. Presbyterian
The last game of the afternoon saw
Miajavon Coleman finishing with her third-straight double-double, recording 12 kills and 15 digs, while Caten finished with six kills, 13 digs and a block.
Sydney Hicks had five digs and three other Eagles had three digs and three blocks each.
Ashley Roman also tallied 17 digs.
In set one, PC got out to an 8-4 lead before a momentum swing came in the favor of the Eagles after back-to back kills from Caten and
Miajavon Coleman, respectively. The Eagles tied the set up at ten, then exchanged points back and forth before PC went on a 7-0 run to take the set 25-23.
Set two went in favor of PC from the opening points. Coppin had ten kills in the set, but PC went on another 4-0 run to take the set 25-12.
Set three started in favor of the Eagles but PC tied the match with the next serve, and the Eagles saw kills from
Miajavon Coleman,
Ahzhi Coleman and Caten to get the match all tied up at five. After another run by PC, a kill from
Kareemah Hopkins brought the Eagles within six but they were unable to get any closer.
Coppin will head back on the road next weekend, September 3-4 for the Sheraton University City Volleyball Invitational, hosted by Penn in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. The Eagles will play Canisius on Friday, September 3 at 4 p.m. inside the Palestra.
