Softball Run-Rules Howard in Game Two of Doubleheader

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team split a MEAC doubleheader with Howard University on Monday afternoon, taking the nightcap, 10-2 in five innings at CSU Softball Field.  The Eagles dropped game one, 7-0.

Isabella Zalba drove in three runs while going 1-for-2 with a double, a run scored and a walk while Vanessa Carrizosa, Nia Bowe and Haley Bravo had two hits apiece.  Carrizosa and Bowe also scored twice, as did Ashley Weimann who blasted a home run over the netting in left field.

Pitcher Kayleigh Reome tossed a complete game in the nightcap to earn the win, allowing just three hits and striking out two without allowing an earned run.  Reome helped her own case at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Howard scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, but Coppin responded with four runs to give Reome the lead at 4-2. Brissa Alvarado led off the game with a walk, and following back-to-back singles by Carrizosa and Bowe, Zalba cleared the bases with a double down the right field line.  Zalba was thrown out, trying to stretch the hit into a double but Weimann followed up with her team-leading third home run of the season.

Reome threw a 1-2-3 second inning and gave up just a walk in the third before Coppin put another two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom half.  Bravo recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice which allowed Zalba to score and the Eagles added another run on Reome's opposite field double.

Howard led off the fourth with a single, but the rally was cut short via a 6-4-3 double play and the Eagles made their rivals pay once again, plating four runs later that inning. Carrizosa got the inning started with a double, and after a pitching change, Bowe doubled to straight away center field to make it a 7-2 score. The Bison then got very sloppy on defense, committing three errors which allowed three more runs to score.

With the run-rule in affect, Reome got the first two Bison to fly out in the fifth, and after issuing a walk, got Howard to fly out once again for the final out.

The opening game went to Howard as CSU mustered just five hits in the opener.  Alvarado collected a pair of hits and drew a walk while Carrizosa, Bravo and Alexis Genovese also had base knocks.

Carrizosa went all seven innings on the rubber, allowing six earned runs in the complete game.

Coppin and Howard will meet on Wednesday, April 28 for a 1 pm doubleheader at CSU Softball Field.
