Nia Bowe Leads Softball to Split of MEAC Doubleheader at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Nia Bowe (Milford, Del. / Milford HS) went a combined 7-for-8 with two home runs and seven RBI as the Coppin State softball team split a MEAC doubleheader at Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles won game one, 7-4, before dropping the nightcap, 6-5.

A native of Milford, Del., which is just under 30 minutes from the Hornets' campus, Bowe had a pair of RBI while going 3-for-4 in game one. Bowe then erupted for a pair of home runs and five RBI in game two, going 4-of-4 with two runs scored.

In the opening game, Bowe put Coppin on top 1-0 with an RBI single up the middle to score Melanie Aguilera.  Delaware State tied it up at 1-1 with a run in the third before Haley Bravo, who also had three hits in the opener, scored on an error after doubling start the fourth.

Coppin held on to the 2-1 lead until the Hornets tied it up once again in the sixth.  The Eagles put a crooked number on the board in the seventh with five runs on six hits while taking advantage of a pair of DSU errors to go up 7-2.

Brissa Alvarado and Sydney Dombrowski had back-to-back two-out singles and pinch runner Ashley Weimann scored after a wild pitch and a fielding error, putting CSU up, 3-2. Bowe and Bravo then drove in runs with two-straight singles before Cindy Sanchez reached on an error to score another run. Desiree Carrizosa brought in the final run with a single down the left field line, scoring Bravo and giving the Eagles a five-run lead.

Alvarado tossed the first six innings for the Eagles and allowed just two runs before Shawnee Ronyak threw the final inning.

Delaware State scored the first run of game two before Bowe tied it up with a leadoff home run in the second and then put the Eagles on top 4-1 with a three-run homer in the third.

The Hornets got one of the runs back in the third before taking a 5-4 lead with three runs in the fifth. DSU added a much-needed insurance run in the sixth as Coppin was able to score a run in the seventh before leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Alexis Genovese reached on an error to start the final inning before getting to third on a single by Dombrowski, who recorded three hits in the nightcap. A walk issued to Melanie Aguilera loaded the bases before Bowe's RBI single made it a 6-5 score with one out.

DSU forced a pair of groundballs to finish the game.

Vanessa Carrizosa allowed five runs in the first 4.1 innings before giving way to Ronyak who threw the final 1.2 innings.

The same two teams will meet again on Sunday, March 21 for a 1 pm doubleheader.
