NORFOLK Va. – Coppin State's volleyball team received three of the MEAC's four weekly awards as
Miajavon Coleman won Player of the Week,
Kareemah Hopkins earned Setter of the Week and
Paola Caten took home Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday.
In conference victories versus Delaware State and Morgan State, Coleman record 28 kills in seven sets while hitting .193 to go with 18 digs, an ace and five blocks. Coleman opened the week with nine kills, seven digs and three blocks in a sweep over the Hornets before notching a double-double with a season-high 19 kills and 11 digs at Morgan State.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Coleman leads the Eagles this season with 121 kills (3.18 per set) to rank third in the MEAC while hitting .173 and ranks second on the squad with 13 aces. Defensively, Coleman ranks third on CSU with 1.74 digs per set and 17 blocks.
Hopkins is now a six-time MEAC Setter of the Week after averaging 10.4 assists per set in Coppin's two wins last week. In a three-set victory over Delaware State, Hopkins recorded 21 assists and a pair of blocks while adding five kills on seven swings. Hopkins then assisted on 52 kills and added nine digs and two blocks in a four-set win at Morgan State.
Representing San Diego, Calif., Hopkins leads the MEAC at 9.38 assists per set. Hopkins has also added 30 kills while hitting .313 and ten aces. Defensively, Hopkins is averaging 1.30 digs per set and is fourth on the team with 16 blocks.
An outside hitter from Tampa, Fla., Caten is earning her first weekly award for her defensive efforts where she averaged 4.43 digs per set last week. Caten opened the week with 13 digs and a block while adding six kills in a sweep over Delaware State. Three days later at Morgan State, Caten notched a double-double with 12 kills while hitting .367 to go with a career-high 18 digs. Caten also recorded a pair of aces and a block in the win over the Bears.
Caten ranks sixth in the MEAC in aces (0.41 per set), seventh in kills (2.52 per set) and eighth in hitting percentage (.289).
The Eagles currently lead the MEAC North at 6-4 overall and 5-1 in league play. Coppin is set to travel to Delaware State on Thursday, March 18, before hosting the Hornets the following night at 6 pm.
