NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Jalynda Salley has been named the MEAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first weekly award for Salley this season, and the third of her career. Salley's two previous honors were Rookie of the Week awards as a freshman during the 2018-19 season.
A junior from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Salley averaged 16.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last week, along with her 7.5 points per game. In Tuesday's game versus Morgan State, Salley pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and blocked three shots before following up with a double-double 13 points and 16 rebounds at Delaware State on Saturday. Salley also blocked a pair of shots and picked up a steal against the Hornets.
For the season, Salley leads the league in rebounding (9.8) and offensive rebounds (4.4) where she ranks 9
th in the Nation. Salley also ranks fifth in the conference in blocks (1.7), sixth in field goal percentage (43.5%) and 18
th in scoring (8.1).
In conference play, Salley is putting up 8.6 points and 11.3 rebounds (3
rd in MEAC) while shooting 45.3% (5
th in MEAC) from the floor and leading the MEAC with 14 blocked shots.
Salley is moving on up the CSU career charts in rebounds and now ranks 8
th in school-history with 79 blocks.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, February 9 when they take on Delaware State in a 3 pm start at the Hornets' Memorial Hall.
