BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team fought to the end, but fell to Delaware State 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21, 15-10) inside the PEC Arena Sunday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 14-11 (8-5 MEAC) while the Hornets move to 23-3 (11-2 MEAC).
Miajavon Coleman lead all Eagles with a double-double, 17 kills and 14 digs.
Paola Caten recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. She also added six blocks, two aces and two assists.
Hope Casel had a season-high in kills with 10 and hit for .348.
Andrea Tsvetanova also notched a double-double with 38 assists and 19 digs. She also recorded three aces on the afternoon. Defensively,
Ashley Roman led the team in digs with 20.
Chudear Tut and
Ahzhi Coleman had six and five blocks, respectively.
In the five-set thriller, it was a total of 10 lead changes and 22 tied scores.
The Eagles came out strong, winning the first set 25-23. The Hornets 16-12 lead was deflated by five straight points by the eagles, including a kill from
Miajavon Coleman, a kill from
Chudear Tut, and an ace by
Ashley Roman. Delaware state fought back with a three-point run, but a pair of back-to-back kills by
Miajavon Coleman deflated the Hornets comeback attempt, placing Coppin at a 20-19 lead. The Eagles maintained the lead for the rest of the set closing with a block by
Ahzhi Coleman and
Paola Caten.
Delaware State started set two with a 4-0 lead, which was countered by a four point run by the Eagles, including a pair of kills from
Miajavon Colemanand
Hope Casel, along with an ace by
Paola Caten. CSU turned a six point deficit (15-21) into a one point deficit (20-21) with five consecutive points with a kill by
Miajavon Colemanand a kill by
Chudear Tut. After going back and forth with the Hornets for the last 7 points, the Eagles lost set two, 25-23 and the match was tied at one a piece. The Eagles went on a 4-0 scoring run in set three before the Hornets tied the set. After two scoring runs from both teams, Delaware State finished the set on another 5-2 run to win the set 25-19 and lead the match 2-1.
After going down 5-1 to open set four, a kill by
Andrea Tsvetanova changed the momentum of the set. After back-to-back points were exchanged, the Eagles went on a 4-0 scoring run to only be down by two. Down 15-11, CSU scored seven unanswered to take the lead 18-15, and then finished the set on another 4-0 scoring run to take the set 25-21 and tie the match at 2-2.
The Hornets opened set five on a 6-2 scoring run and the Eagles rallied to get within four. But Delaware State sealed the deal after an attack error to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Coppin State is back in action on Friday, November 12 hosting Morgan State inside the PEC Arena. First serve is slated for 7 pm.
