Coppin Women’s Hoops Face Rhode Island Sunday

BALTIMORE – Coppin State women's basketball team face Rhode Island on the road, Sunday, November 14 at noon.  The game will be live stream accessible from University of Rhode Island official athletics website as well as Coppin State Sports website.

Opening Tip
The Eagles and the Rams will be playing each other for the first time in school history.   Both teams will be battling to maintain their non-conference win streak.  

Last Time Out
Coppin State women's basketball won their home opener with a 73-56 victory over William and Mary Thursday night, placing the Eagles with a 2-0 record..
 
Jaia Alexander led all players with a game-high 19 points followed by Jalynda Salley with 13 points. while freshman Colleen Bucknor recorded nine points and seven rebounds. Alexandria Hamilton, Aliyah Lawson and Nailah Delinois scored eight points each.
 
Coppin Contributors
A Second Team All-MEAC selection last season, Lawson finished second in the conference with 14.5 points per game while ranking third with 38 3-point field goals.  A native of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Lawson also finished with 4.5 rebounds per game to go with 24 assists and 17 steals. Lawson received three MEAC Player of the Week awards, scored at least 20 points in four games and reached double figures in 12 games.
Lawson scored a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for her first-ever double-double against Morgan State. In her two seasons at Coppin, Lawson ranks sixth in CSU history in 3-point field goals (84) and free throw percentage (72.4%).
Salley received Third Team All-MEAC and All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 9.3 points per game while ranking fourth in the MEAC in rebounds (8.8) and seventh in blocks (18).  A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Salley led the conference with 4.1 offensive rebounds per game which ranked 18th nationally.  In MEAC games, Salley averaged 10.0 points and 9.6 rebounds with a pair of double doubles.
In her three seasons with the Eagles, Salley has recorded 82 blocked shots which ranks eighth in CSU history.

Returning from last season is Alexandria Hamilton, Aliyah Lawson, Hope Evans, Nailah Delinois, and Jalynda Salley.
 
New to the Nest
The Eagles welcomed in 10 student-athletes this season including: Mossi Staples, Nadjy Tyler, Jewel Watkins, Jaia Alexander, Colleen Bucknor, Khya Jenkins and Cortney Gardner.
 
Scouting the Rams
Rhode Island women's basketball was selected to finish second in the 2021-22 Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll. Redshirt senior Emmanuelle Tahane was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team, redshirt junior Marie-Paule Foppossi earned a spot on the Second Team, and grad transfer Dez Elmore landed on the Third Team.  
 
In the 2020-2021 season, the Rams placed third overall in the Atlantic 10, finishing the season 12-6 overall (8-2 in conference).  Rhode Island was top in the conference in field goal percentage (43.7%), and in defensive rebounds, with 29.6 RPG while totaling 562 rebounds for the season.  They were third in the Atlantic 10 in three point field goal percentages (32.9%).   
 
Rhode Island won their first non-conference game against Dartmouth, with a score of 83-37, with five players scoring in double figures, led by Chanell Williams with 20 points.
