GLEN ALLEN, Va. – Coppin State's bowling team defeated Bowie State and upset 12
th-ranked Sacred Heart to advance to the Championship Game of the Virginia Union Invitational before falling, 4-2 to Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Bowl America Short Pump. The Eagles finished the tournament with a 9-3 mark.
To open bracket play, Coppin swept Bowie State, 4-0 which included a massive 241-157 victory in the second baker match against the Bulldogs. The Eagles edged out Bowie State in the third game before moving on to the second round with a 185-159 win.
Sacred Heart edged Coppin, 159-158 in the opening game before the Eagles won four-straight to advance to the Championship Game. Coppin defeated the Pioneers, 200-159 in the second game to tie the match and won the next three games comfortably to move on.
Morgan State won the first two games to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the title game before Coppin took down the Bears, 163-157 in the third. MSU went up a 3-1 with a win in game four but Coppin battled to a 213-199 triumph in the fifth. Morgan was able to edge CSU, 189-180 in the final frame of the sixth game to take the tournament title.
The Eagles will return to the lanes on November 13-14 at MEAC Meet #1, held at AMF Woodlawn Lanes in Gwynn Oak, Md.
