Baseball Falls at Navy, 6-1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team played solid defense throughout but did not have enough offensive punch in a 6-1 loss to Navy on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.

Inside the Numbers
  • Justin Oakley and Marcos Castillo had two hits apiece, but the rest of the Coppin State lineup went 0-for-24 on the day. Oakley also had a double and scored a run on Castiilo's RBI double just after.
  • Lawrence Noble made his collegiate pitching debut and allowed two runs on two hits over 1.2 innings.  Noble struck out the very first batter he faced.
  • Anthony Martinez also gave up two runs and struck out two over 3.1 innings but issued five walks.
  • Corey Treyes tossed the sixth and seventh innings in his first appearance of the season and allowed a pair of runs.
  • Making his first relief appearance in two years, Aaron Rea faced the minimum in the eighth inning, and despite giving up a base hit, picked off the runner at first base.
  • Ryan Duffey led the Navy offense by going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Reece Early allowed one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts over five innings to get the win for the Midshipmen.
How it Happened
  • Both teams went scoreless in the first inning as Marcos Castillo was stranded for Coppin after recording a one-out single.  In the bottom half of the frame, freshman Lawrence Noble fanned the very first batter he faced, retiring all three batters he faced.
  • Navy put two runs across in the second inning, but Anthony Martinez came in with two outs and the bases loaded and got a fly out to end the inning.
  • It remained a 2-0 score in favor of the Midshipmen as neither team scored over the next three innings.
  • The Eagles got on the board with a run in the sixth as Justin Oakley led off the frame with a double to right center, followed by Castillo's double down the left field line to bring Oakley home.
  • Castiilo's RBI ended the day for Navy's Reece Early, but the Midshipmen retired the next three batters to end the frame.
  • Navy scored three runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1 as Coppin was unable to put a runner on base over the final three innings.
Up Next: Coppin State returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 25 at Richmond.  First pitch is slated for 1:30 pm.
