Ibn Williams added a career-high 18, but the Coppin State men's basketball team fell to
Isaiah Bailey and Bethune-Cookman, 85-80 on Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.
Inside the Numbers
- Dejuan Clayton finished with 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting while making 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Clayton also grabbed six rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
- Clayton now has 1,128 points and passed Francis Jaymes ('74) for 17th on the CSU all-time scoring list. He also now has 285 assists, tying Vince Goldsberry ('11) for eighth in Coppin history.
- Ibn Williams made 7-of-11 shots and 4-of-7 from distance to finish with 18 points, marking a new career-high.
- Also finishing in double figures was Koby Thomas who added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a pair of threes to go with seven rebounds.
- Brendan Medley-Bacon added eight points to go with a career-high 13 rebounds and matched a career-high with five blocks.
- Reggie James and Andrew Robinson chipped in with seven points and six points, respectively.
- Led by Isaiah Bailey's 25 points and ten rebounds, and Joe French's 20 points, Bethune-Cookman made 47.1% of its shots compared to 45.6% for the Eagles. The Wildcats made 17-of-32 free throws compared to 8-of-14 for CSU.
How it Happened
- Koby Thomas opened the game with a three just over a minute into the game and Brendan Medley-Bacon made 1-of-2 free throws seconds later, giving Coppin an early 4-0 lead.
- After a basket by Bethune-Cookman, Thomas drove in for a layup and Dejuan Clayton made another 1-of-2 from the stripe to make it a 7-2 score at the 16:14 mark.
- Neither team scored for nearly two minutes, but the Wildcats tied it up at 7-7 before Andrew Robinson drained a three with 12:44 left, giving CSU a 10-7 advantage.
- Robinson's three started a 12-0 run by the Eagles who led 19-7 with 9:27 to go.
- Bethune-Cookman slowly climbed back into it and tied the score at 26 before outscoring CSU, 13-7 in the final five mutes to take a 39-33 halftime lead.
- The Wildcats scored seven-straight points out of the break, capped off by a dunk by Isaiah Bailey, extending their advantage to 46-33 with 19:02 left.
- CSU battled back to within three points with 6:10 after an 8-0 run which featured a three by Ibn Williams and a three-point play by Clayton.
- The hosts scored five-straight points following Clayton's and-1 and held on for the victory.
