Ashley Roman Named MEAC Volleyball Defensive Specialist of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Ashley Roman has been named the MEAC Volleyball Defensive Specialist of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.  This is the first weekly award that Roman has received in her career.

A freshman from Isabela, Puerto Rico, Roman led the conference with an impressive 5.21 digs per set as the Eagles went 2-2 in their first weekend of play.  Roman also added nine assists and a service ace in the first four matches of the season.

Roman was named to the Delaware Classic All-Tournament Team as she averaged 4.78 digs per set along with seven assists and ace in three matches.  In a season-opening, three-set win over Binghamton, the program's first win in an opener since 2014, Roman recorded a match-high 18 digs which was the most by an Eagles player since November 12, 2017.  The following day, Roman led CSU with ten digs against West Virginia and led all players with another 15 digs against the host Blue Hens later that night.

On Sunday evening, Roman was credited with a whopping 30 digs in a five-set victory over Siena in Coppin's home opener.  The 30 digs in a single-match are the second-most in school-history, just shy of Gabrielle Otero's 32 which was set on September 9, 2011 against Lafayette.
