Baseball Falls at George Washington, 12-2

ARLINGTON, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team used six pitchers in a 12-2 loss at George Washington University on Wednesday afternoon at Barcroft Park. The Eagles were swept by the Colonials this season and have yet to defeat GW in its program-history.

  • Justin Banks recorded a pair of base hits and an RBI to lead Coppin's offense which managed just five hits on the day.
  • Nick Martinez, Nazier McIlwain and Isaiah Wilson had the other base knocks with McIlwain and Wilson's hits going for two bases.
  • Ryan McWilliams got the start on the mound and retired two of the first three batters, but a costly error gave GW the lead and the freshman got rattled, walking the next three batters before being replaced by Carter Harbut.

How It Happened
  • George Washington scored a pair of unearned runs in the first and scored four in the third to take a 6-0 lead before Justin Banks put Coppin on the board in the fifth with an RBI single to right, scoring Cole Gerula from second.
  • The Colonials added four runs in their half of the fifth and two more in the seventh to go up 12-1.
  • Matt Day scored a run for the Eagles in the ninth on a passed ball after drawing a walk, advancing 90 feet on a wild pitch and reaching third on a flyout by Derek Lohr.
Up Next: Coppin State visits MEAC rival Delaware State for the final MEAC series of the season on May 3-5.  The Eagles lead Norfolk State by one game in the MEAC North as the Spartans visit Maryland Eastern Shore. CSU and NSU split the season-series this year with three wins each.
