Baseball Drops a Pair at Games at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's baseball team lost a pair of pivotal games at Delaware State on Friday afternoon at Soldier Field.  The Eagles fell, 5-4 in ten innings in the opener, before being run-ruled, 18-1, in the nightcap.

Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
  • Marcos Castillo went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Isaiah Wilson also had a pair of base knocks.
  • Aaron Rea got the nod on the mound and allowed three runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings while striking out eight.
  • Corey Treyes gave up a pair of runs on four hits while striking out five in 2.0 innings.
 
 
How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Delaware State took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second and it remained that way until the fourth inning when Coppin scored a pair on a two-run double by Marcos Castillo.
  • The Hornets tied it up in the fifth with a run but Castillo drove in another run in the sixth and Corey Treyes recorded an RBI double in the seventh to give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.
  • DSU cut it to 4-3 with a run in the seventh and tied the score with another run in the eighth.
  • Coppin threatened to no avail in the ninth as Treyes got a 1-2-3 inning in his first inning of relief.  The Eagles went down in order in the tenth and DSU got a single, hit batsman and walk in the ninth to load the bases with no outs. A single by Rich Roundtree gave the hosts a walk-off win.

How It Happened (Game 2)
  • The nightcap was all Delaware State from start to finish as they scored seven runs in the first.  Nick Martinez recorded an RBI single in the second to score Isaiah Wilson but that was all the runs Coppin could muster.
  • DSU scored three in the second, five in the fourth and three in the fifth, putting the run-rule into affect.
