Baseball Blanks Norfolk State; Ties School-Record with 21st Win

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team shut out MEAC rival Norfolk State, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Marty Miller Field.  The victory gives the Eagles 21 victories to match a CSU single-season record that they set in both 2005 and 2018.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 5, Norfolk State 0
  • Records: Coppin State (21-16, 12-6 MEAC), Norfolk State (16-19, 12-6 MEAC)
  • Location: Norfolk, Va. (Marty Miller Field)
Inside the Numbers
  • Devin Rivera Ozuna improved to 7-1 on the year and 5-0 in MEAC play, tossing 6.1 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just four hits while striking out a career-high 11.  Branden Redfern fanned three Spartans in the next 1.2 innings before giving way to Corey Treyes who threw a scoreless ninth.
  • Carlos Alviarez went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run while Matt Day, Nazier McIlwain and Treyes all had a pair of base hits.  Treyes also drove in two runs while McIlwain scored twice.
  • Justin Banks and Erik Crossman both recorded a base hit and a walk apiece to reach base safely twice in the game.
  • Coppin outhit Norfolk, 14-6 for the game and the teams are now tied for first place in the MEAC North while splitting the season-series with three wins each.
How It Happened
  • Both teams went scoreless in the first inning as Coppin went down in order before Devin Rivera Ozuna forced a double play in the bottom half of the frame.
  • The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI groundout by Marcos Castillo after Nazier McIlwain and Carlos Alviarez recorded back-to-back singles to start the inning.
  • That would be all of the runs that Rivera Ozuna would need as the senior struck out four batters over the next two innings.
  • CSU scored three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Corey Treyes, a sac bunt by Conner Walker and an RBI single by Matt Day.
  • Rivera Ozuna fanned another two Spartans in the fourth before Treyes singled home another run in the fifth to make it a 5-0 game.
  • After fanning the leadoff batter in the seventh, Rivera Ozuna was replaced by Branden Redfern who got out of the inning unscathed despite a walk.  Redfern struck out two batters in the eighth before Treyes shut the door on the hosts in the ninth.
