Softball Burned by Drexel Dragons in Doubleheader

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped back-to-back games to Drexel University, 17-2 and 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon at CSU Softball Field.
 
The Basics
  • Final Score (Game 1): Coppin State 2, Drexel 17
  • Final Score (Game 2): Coppin State 1, Drexel 7
  • Records: Coppin State (3-18), Drexel (19-11-1)
How it Happened (Game 1)
  • Drexel scored four runs in the first inning with a home run and a couple of Coppin State errors.
  • CSU was able to get one run across in its half of the frame on an RBI single up by the middle by Patricia SoriaMegan Narvaez scored on the play after drawing a leadoff walk and getting into scoring position on a wild pitch.
  • A three-run home run by the Dragons sparked a six run second as Drexel extended its lead to 10-1 after two innings.
  • Jaylene Sierra relieved Madison Didion in the fourth and allowed six runs, only one of which was earned.
  • Soraya Valdez-Frick hit a solo home run for Coppin in the fourth but DU got the run back in the fifth and won, 17-2.
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
  • Madison Didion allowed seven earned runs in the first three innings before Jaylene Sierra gave up just two earned runs in the final two frame.
  • Soraya Valdez-Frick was the lone Eagles player to reach safely twice with a home run and a walk in one official at-bat.
How it Happened (Game 2)
  • Brissa Alvarado held Drexel scoreless in the first two innings, including a 1-2-3 second inning.
  • Drexel was able to put three runs on the board in the third but Coppin got one run back in its half on a double down the line by Soraya Valdez-Frick to score Cloe Ochoa.
  • Alvarado held the Dragons scoreless once again in the fourth and fifth but Drexel got four runs on four hits and took advantage of a few defensive mental lapses to take a 7-1 lead. The Dragons went scoreless again in the seventh, which included a diving play by Desiree Carrizosa at second base, but held Coppin in check in the seventh to seal the win.
Inside the Numbers (Game 2) Up Next
  •  ​​​​​​​Coppin is back home for a three-game MEAC series on April 6-7 against Maryland Eastern Shore.  Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 pm followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
