Baseball Edged by Navy, 5-4, in Midweek Tilt in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A late rally by Coppin State's baseball team fell just short as the Eagles were defeated at Navy, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.

 Inside the Numbers
  • Carlos Alviarez went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI to lead the way for CSU.
  • Matt Day also collected a pair of base hits for Coppin while Derek Lohr scored a pair of runs.
  • Carter Harbut took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work while striking out three.
  • Anthony Martinez was charged with a run over 1.1 innings while Branden Redfern and Corey Treyes combined to fan three Midshipmen while giving up one hit in the final 1.2 innings.
How It Happened
  • Navy got out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second but Coppin tied it up with a pair of runs in the fourth. Justin Banks led off the frame with a walk, got to second on a single by Derek Lohr and scored on a RBI single by Carlos Alviarez.  Lohr later scored on a single by Nick Martinez.
  • The hosts got both runs back in their half of the fourth, and after two scoreless innings, extended the lead to 5-2 with a run in the seventh.
  • Coppin rallied for two runs in the eighth on an opposite field double by Alviarez which scored Lohr and Nazier McIlwain.
  • Corey Treyes got a 1-2-3 eighth inning to keep the deficit at 5-4 but the Eagles went down in order in the ninth.
 Up Next: Coppin heads to Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game MEAC series on April 5-7. The games are set for 3 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
