Baseball Toppled by UMBC in Midweek Showdown

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State dropped a midweek clash with in-state rival UMBC, 16-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.
 
The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 2, UMBC 16
  • Records: Coppin State (12-9), UMBC (8-11)

Inside the Numbers
  • Derek Lohr, Nazier McIlwain and Drew Thomas all had two hits to lead the Eagles offensively while Justin Banks and Conner Walker recorded base hits while also drawing walks.  Lohr scored both of Coppin's runs.
  • Anthony Martinez was charged with three earned runs while striking out a career-high five in 4.1 innings which was his longest career-outing. Martinez streak of 15.2 innings without allowing an earned run came to an end.
  • Lucas Richards gave up an earned run in 1.2 innings while all five of Ryan McWilliams' runs were unearned.
  • Daniel Alvarez and Devyan Dyal gave up six earned runs in a combined inning of work while Matt Urban closed out the CSU, allowing just one hit and a walk in the final 1.1 innings.
 
How It Happened
  • After both teams went scoreless through the first three innings, Coppin took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double by Justin Banks which scored Derek Lohr who had a two-base knock to start the inning.
  • Starting pitcher Anthony Martinez, who held UMBC scores through the first four innings, tired and the Retrievers scored five runs in the fifth.  Martinez was credited with three earned runs as Lucas Richards relieved him with one out and allowed two hits and a pair of walks before getting out of the jam.
  • Richards threw a scoreless sixth before UMBC scored five unearned runs in the seventh to take a 10-1 lead.
  • The Retrievers tacked on six more in the eighth before the Eagles scored a run with a pair of hits and a wild pitch to end the scoring.
 
Up Next: Coppin hosts MEAC rival Norfolk State for a three-game series starting on Friday, March 29 at 3 pm.  Saturday's game will start at 2 pm followed by a 1 pm first pitch on Sunday afternoon.
