Baseball Doubles Up Delaware State, 10-5 to Earn MEAC Series Win

DOVER, Del. – Corey Treyes and Erik Crossman homered while starting pitcher Aaron Rea tossed six efficient innings to lead the Coppin State baseball team to a 10-5 victory at Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.  This marks the tenth-straight MEAC series win for the Eagles who took at least two games in all eight three-game series' last season.

Inside the Numbers
  • Coppin State outhit Delaware State, 10-6 with five different players recording two base hits: Carlos Alviarez, Justin Banks, Marcos Castillo, Erik Crossman and Drew Thomas. Alviarez and Thomas also drew a walk to reach base safely three times.
  • Corey Treyes drove in three runs while Crossman, Derek Lohr and Conner Walker each drove in a pair of runs.
  • Treyes' home run was the second of the season (second of his career) while Crossman's blast was the first of his career.
  • Aaron Rea evened his record at 2-2 on the year, allowing just four runs on four hits while striking out five in 6.0 innings. Branden Redfern struck out two of the four batters he faced and Treyes tossed a scoreless inning.  Lucas Richards gave up a run in two-thirds of an inning.

How It Happened
  • The Eagles scored eight runs in the first three innings while not allowing one to take a 8-0 lead.  Coppin's first three runs came in the second inning as Drew Thomas put CSU on the board with a bunt single to score Erik Crossman which also loaded the bases with no outs.  After back-to-back fielder's choices which forced out the runner at home, Derek Lohr doubled to left field, scoring Thomas and Cole Gerula.
  • Crossman and Corey Treyes both homered in the third inning, accounting for all five of Coppin's runs in the inning.  Justin Banks led off the frame with a single before Crossman's shot to left field.  Treyes' roundtripper was of the three-run variety, making it an 8-0 ballgame.
  • Delaware State used a two-out rally to score two in the third and added two more in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-4.
  • Coppin got two of the runs back in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Conner Walker.
  • Lucas Richards relieved Aaron Rea to start the seventh and gave up a leadoff home run, but retired the next two batters.  After an error and a walk, Branden Redfern retired the final batter of the frame.
  • Redfern also pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning before Treyes faced the minimum in the ninth to get the win.

Up Next: Coppin returns to action on Tuesday, March 26 when it travels to Mount St. Mary's for a 3:30 pm start.
