Baseball Falls at Delaware State in Series Opener

DOVER, Del. – The Coppin State baseball team dropped its series opener at MEAC rival Delaware State, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at Soldier Field.

Inside the Numbers

• Carlos Alviarez and Nazier McIlwain had two hits apiece as Coppin State was outhit by the hosts, 10-7.  Matt Day, Justin Banks and Marcos Castillo also had base knocks while Banks also drew a pair of walks.
• Jahmon Taylor allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out six in 5.0 innings.  Branden Redfern fanned three in two scoreless innings, all of which came in the sixth, while Bradley Tuttle tossed a scoreless eighth. 

How It Happened

• Coppin's lone run of the game came in the top of the first as Nazier McIlwain scored on a passed ball.  McIlwain reached third after singling and advancing to second on a fielder's choice and then getting to third on a walk issued to Erik Crossman.
• Delaware State tied the score at one in its half of the second and then scored two run in both the second and third innings and that would do it for the scoring the rest of the game.
• Coppin left nine runners on base in the opener.
