Baseball Drops Midweek Tilt to George Washington University

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a 7-1 decision to George Washington University on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.
 
The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 1, George Washington 7

Inside the Numbers
  • Erik Crossman had two of Coppin's six base hits with Justin Banks, Carlos Alviarez, Derek Lohr and Cole Gerula recording the others.  Lohr and Gerula also drew walks while Banks had the team's lone RBI.
  • Matt Day and Nazier McIlwain both walked twice with Day scoring a run.
  • The freshman pitching duo of Jonathan Rice and Carter Harbut got through the first six innings and allowed just three earned runs combined.  Rice allowed two earned on five hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings before Harbut allowed just one run on one hit while fanning two in 3.1 innings.
  • Bradley Tuttle struck out two Colonials in his lone inning while allowing two runs on three hits. 
  • Anthony Martinez tossed a scoreless eighth with one walk while Corey Treyes pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout.
 
How It Happened
  • Jonathan Rice struck out the first two batters looking to start the game but three singles and a hit batsman allowed two runs to cross home for George Washington in the first inning.
  • Coppin State got one of the runs back in its half of the frame on an RBI double to the gap in right center by Justin BanksMatt Day scored on the play after he drew a one-out walk and got to second when Nazier McIlwain did the same.
  • Two more scored for GW in the second as the Colonials opened a 4-1 lead.  The Eagles threatened and loaded the bases but came up empty.
  • Rice got two outs in the third but was relieved by Carter Harbut with two runners on and Harbut got CSU out of the inning unscathed.
  • The Eagles once again got a runner on in their half but were unable to capitalize and GW extended its lead to 5-1 after four innings.
  • Harbut tossed scoreless innings and the fifth and sixth as Coppin left three runners on base in the frames.
  • The Colonials added two more runs in the seventh to end the scoring.
 
Up Next: Coppin will play a three game MEAC series at Delaware State on March 22-24.  Games will start at 3 pm on Friday, 2 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
